san francisco days… san francisco nights…

travelogue – short trip down and up from seattle to san francisco.

so riddle me this.  and *disclaimer* i am not usually one to rant about the tsa or the fabulous contributions they make to national security, however, there is a limit.  there has to be a limit.  right? right?

back to riddling.  i prepare for my flight by diligently checking the website to ensure i’m following the latest and greatest in home land security advisements.  the latest being all liquids/gels/creams etc must be placed in a 1 gallon clear plastic bag and must contain no more than 3 oz of that substance if it is going in your carry on.  ok gotcha.

deodorant 2.7 oz – check
lotion 1.0 oz travel size – check
toothpaste – less then half of a 6.2 oz tube – check
leave shampoo and conditioner at home – will pick some up in sf – check
placed in a nice clear zip lock container – check

i’m golden.  and a few hours later i’m in the security screening line feeling rather smug at my preparedness.  in fact feeling so smug i chuckle to myself as i check out the guy in front of me who has what appears to be four large glass containers with apple scented candles in them.  all four are in a wooden box that has rope wrapped around it and look like rather menacing could-be bomb like devices.  i think – "there is no way they are going to let him take that on a plane".  i mean they just took away some lady’s eye cream and pitched it in the large 30 gallon black trash can filled to the brim with orphaned toiletries.

amazingly enough – he gets through with no problems – i waggle my eyebrows and think – "well that was unexpected".  so i’m breezing through after him and get trapped by the cracker jack terrorism preventing tsa agent who holds in front of me in a very accusatory way my tube of crest regular tooth paste.  she says "sorry maam but this cannot go on board, all containers must be less than three ounces – this is 6.2".  me not catching the subtlety of her point says, "oh but there is less than half in there" and watch as she simultaneously explains they can’t be expected to measure all substances and tosses my tube in the can.  wow.  just wow.  simply wow.  *sighs*

recap:  large – half – poundish – glass containers of flammable materials = ++ good
recap:  less than half of a 6.2 oz tube of creamy crest toothpaste = ++bad

identity crisis

there is this website i discovered awhile back called onxiam.  essentially you create a log in for this site and then proceed to fill in all your various identities across the web.  if you make it that far you will see a drop down box for all the various sites and services that you possibly have an identity for…  i spent an afternoon filling out mine with this sort of pathological need to fill in all the blanks, all the while thinking (cue my best joan crawford imitation) no. more. social. networks. ever!!!

i stopped blogging just about a year ago. in fact i think my last blog post here on my  msn spaces blog (now windows live spaces – see what happens in a year) was written sept 14th, 2005. that’s my dad’s birthday by the way. he’s had a hell of a year too.

i created an account in second life, now i own my own island

i left microsoft to move to san francisco and work for linden lab, now i just moved from san francisco to seattle and am back at microsoft.

my mom was given three months to live, now she’s still here and looking forward to christmas.

i was a size 10, i am a size 18, i will be a size 10 a year from now

i loved my psp, now i love my ds

the incredible good fortune to work at both linden lab and microsoft; i’m still blown away. and the gift of each additional day that my mom is around to drive me nuts over clean socks and help with her computer. the experience of walking through the mission district every day to and from work. a year later. i am different.

You know you are up to no good when you don’t post a blog entry in over week – but more on that later…

Spending the weekend in Sebastopol at the Friend’s of O’reilly campout.  I had the pleasure to attend a couple of years ago, and it’s been great to catch up with some of the great people I met at FOO #1.  Later today I am going to be doing a session called "My Life in the Matrix: one player’s experiences in the ever expanding world of MMORPGs", The plan is to spend a few minutes looking at three current MMOs - World of Warcraft, Star Wars Galaxies and my latest *cough* addiction *cough* Second Life. The rest of the time will be open discussion about what else we might expect from these emerging virtual worlds as they continue to grow more popular.  Last night Cory from Linden Labs and I decided to partner up for our session as he is going to talk about Second Life‘s lessons to date of building a completely user-created online world, from technical, legal, economic and community perspectives.  This should be a lot of fun, as games seem to be a running theme at this year’s gathering.

I’m running off to another session, but will hope back on later for further FOO news.  In the meantime you can see all sorts of pics here.

Summer Blogging
August 12, 2005, 1:07 pm
There is something incredibly difficult about blogging when:

1.  its 80-90 degrees outside
2.  you just started a new job
5.  you discover how to podcast and videoblog in the same weekend.

So let’s take these in order.

There is something really difficult about doing anything computer related when the weather is bright and beautiful AND your dog finally learns how to swim.  I’ve spent more time outside this summer than I remember in recent years.  There is something about the sunshine that compels me to go outside; whether a quick walk to Fremont for coffee or a jaunt in Gas Works park I honestly believe I live in the most beautiful place on Earth.  Once night finally settles in and it is time to blog my head usually hits the pillow for a good night’s sleep.  I should also mention in Seattle it doesn’t get really dark until about 10PM during the summer months.

I started my new job a little over a month ago, and as is often the case at Microsoft I hit the ground running picking up various projects for the Channel 9 team.  I’m also working on a few things for September’s Professional Developers Conference so stay tuned for reports once we get closer to the event.  The videos I have shot for Channel 9 have not made it up on the site yet, but I have to warn you once they do I am still very much learning how to shoot a proper video; i.e. lighting, framing, etc.

After what felt like an incredibly long wait, Sci Fi Friday is back in business with new episodes of Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica.  I hate to say that both Stargates are pretty much filler while waiting for Galactica, but they just pale in comparison to what I consider to be one of the best television programs of all time.    Recently they added old  episodes of Firefly to the line-up so if you didn’t catch the series when it originally ran on FOX – you must not miss it this time around.  Especially with the movie Serenity just around the corner.

I am now a full template Jedi in Star Wars Galaxies having gained my last skill in Powers – CLOAK! – since then I’ve been having a blast sneaking up on people and running the Corvette without being taken out by a SBD (super battle droid) the minute I step out of the starting point.  Next on the agenda – get all the POI badges, continue to move up the rebel ranks, and give the GWC a go by trying to get better at PVP.

As much as I enjoy blogging, I’m finally embracing the world of media by giving both podcasting and videoblogging a go.  Probably the best advice I received was focus your content on something you know a lot about and you have plenty to say on.  I took that to heart and am dabbling with a Podcast series - Tales from Eclipse: A Star Wars Galaxies Podcast and a series of SWG How To Videoblogs.  I don’t have a dedicated host for either, but thanks to my husband they both have a temporary home.

The good news is the weather has returned to the normal 70-80 degrees and it’s starting to get darker earlier which means curling up with my laptop and getting back to writing.  Hope everyone else is having as good a summer as I am.
